Author: Andy Reddick
Manufacturer: AuthorHouse
The author states in the preface that he grew up with the word "boughten," used frequently and interchangeably with "store bought," meaning something manufactured and purchased in a store or something that was not made on the premises at home. His vivid memory spans six decades and goes back to the end of World War II when most of rural Iowa remained without electricity or running water, and had not yet come out of the Depression. He remembers when his family first began using "boughten" sliced bread, margarine and "boughten" ice cream. This was a time when coins burned a hole in his pocket as he ran barefoot along a dusty road to the country general store, where countless things awaited that he could buy for a nickel. Some of the author's ancestors wrote about their struggles and life on the frontier. He has included many of these stories and anecdotes, with the folklore of making maple sugar, apple cider and cabbage kraut; advice from Ben Franklin; cooking for threshers; churning butter and going to the County Fair. There are war stories told by other ancestors, such as his Great-grandfather William Reddick, who won a Congressional Medal of Honor as one of Andrews' Raiders during the Civil War. Also included are stories of children's heroism during the American Revolution, and by those that were captured and held captive by Indians. Filled with folklore and history, this is a very informative collector's item with broad appeal. The last chapter of the book is a genealogy record of many lines of the author's family history, making the text a valuable asset for libraries.
