Answer:Although there are various factors (that I imagine you have considered) to take into account, I would say that the short answer to your question is "yes". (I would say there might be a divide between former polytechnics that only became universities after 1992 and the more established universities with a good record for research, but I'm not sure that holds true to such an extent as was the case, say 10 years ago, not least as some of the "new" universities have developed expertise in specialisms neglected elsewhere) (I would also add that, at least for arts subjects in the UK, the greater difficulty is not so much in being accepted onto a post-grad degree, but on finding funding to support yourself from a scholarship, etc, while so doing, if that is required: To the funding bodies, a first class degree from a medium or lower ranking university, combined with a solid and well-thought-through research proposal, would count more in your favour than a 2.1 from a higher ranking uni and a less coherent or cohesive proposal for research) Here's a suggestion: phone or email the relevant admissions tutor/departmental secretary at the university or universities you are considering, and ask them for information about graduates who have gone on to post-grad study, either at the same institution, or elsewhere, over, say, the last 5 years or so. That should give you some idea of the lie of the land.

Do League Tables Fully Represent The Success Of A School?

A schools purpose is basically to prepare young people with the skills to get a profitable career, so does a league table portray how successful it was in achieving this? And what exactly does a league table show? Is it the average grades of gcse results in just mths english and science?

Answer:No! No! No! No! No! Sorry, I used to work in a school and this is one of my hobby horses. The most important thing you can look at in the league tables is something called "value added". This shows you how far children progressed while in a school. Children are meant to go up one grade every Key Stage. If they achieve more than that, it's called value added. It's confusing, but the reason it's important is because it takes into account where the child started from. For example, if a large proportion of children in a secondary school started with poor grades, then the school does well to get them average grades. Conversely, if a large proportion started with excellent grades, the school doesn't have so much work to do to get them good grades in the end. Also, try to find out how the school performed when compared with schools in similar areas. This takes into account factors such as family life, social deprevation and expectations (e.g children who come from families where no one has ever gone to University are much less likely to go). But I'm a firm believer in going to see a school at work. Try open days, but always asked to be shown around on a school day. If the school doesn't do this, that should raise alarm bells. When you visit the school, get a feel for the atmosphere. Talk to teachers - try to get an idea of their attitude towards teaching and the children. And try to talk to the kids too, they'll always give you an honest opinion!! Remember, getting a job is about more than just grades. A sucessful school, in my opinion, helps children become well rounded and confident adults. Thus ended the lesson. Sorry for going on!!!

Where Can I View Weekly Archives Of Premier League Tables?

Specifically, I want to be able to view the Premier League table for any given week of a recent season, e.g. the first week of November 2007. I don't think people have understood this question very well so far. I don't want to see this week's table. I don't want to see the table for the end of any given season. I want to see the table for a particular week in a particular year.

How Reliable Are University League Tables (UK)?

Im trying to decide what university i want to attend. Are league tables reliable guides to whether a university is good or not?

Answer:Not necessarily as they take a lot of different factors into account eg staff: student ratio, amount spent by students on books etc. However they are a good general pointer as to which are good for which subject, by which I mean don't worry too much about which is in third place as compared to, say, fifth, but if the university you are looking at is placed hundredth then it's unlikely to be either very good or very well respected in that subject. The league tables do still matter to prospective employers, rightly or wrongly.
