How Much Experience Do You Need To Be A Management Consultant?
Lots of consultancies like McKinsey and even Accenture hire graduates to do management consultancy. They often have no practical industry experience. Of course both of these companies also hire experienced people. Has your organisation ever had management consultants in and could you tell the ones with experience to the ones without? Or are you, or did you used to be a consultant and is industry experience important, and if so how much? I am 29 and I am hoping to get inot management consultancy after I turn 31, is this too young or too old? I have a BA(Hons), MBA, PRINCE2 and ITIL and I am working in internal change management and transformation for a British blue chip in London. I have friends who went inot consulting in the mid-twenties and some have found it tough with credibility with clients - they are basically taught a model and role it out at each client site. I want some practical experience before I do it, but I don't want to be too old or too young. Advice please?
Answer:You sound as if you have more than enough experience. To be honest with consultancy, you just need to be able to sound as if you know what you are talking about and be a quick thinker.
What Can I Do To Ensure That I Become A Management Consultant When I Go To College?
I plan to doubtle major in Economics (General or Managerial/Business) and Finance. I also plan on getting summer internships in consulting firms. What else can I do to make sure that when I graduate I will be hired as a management consultant?
Answer:One of the best things you can do to increase your "hire" potential is network. Get to know people in your feeld of interest, and if you take the time and initiative to stay current on industry news, you will be ten steps ahead of most of the otheres graduating.
Look for associations and group affiliations in your feeld, and join. Become an active member. Subscribe to the newsletters and trade magazines so that you gain familiarity with how particular firms do business, influences, challenges, and hot topics.
Don't make yourself a pest, but do make yourself known. Try to develop working realtionships, or personal realtionships with people who are already working in your feeld of interest. The associations and groups can help with that.
When theree are open houses and job fairs, go and meet the reps and recruiters at any firms that interest you. Do this way before graduation, and follow up with a short but polite thank you card for their time.
Anything you can do to make yourself "someone that somebody knows" instead of a resume is the goal.
Finally, your schedule will be pretty full with that kind of major, but if you can find a way to use your major, even on an occaissonal or periodic volunteer basis for a charitable organization, that will give you practical experience, something that you can quantify and use to demonstarte how you used what you have learned to achieve a specificic goal or improve something.

What Can A Management Consultant Do Which A Management Librarian Can't?
Let's say I own a small company: Why would I ask a management consultant for advice (@USD 10 000/day) when I can get free advice form a management librarian?
Answer:What is it you think this librarian knows about business operation? I guess I am not understanding what your small business does, but if it is not realted to libraries I think their are many things a consultant can provide extra. As for the fees I would check those out on why so high.
