Is Cost Management Really That Important Today?

I've observed that some businessmen have begun to move toward philosophies such as demand creation and demand management and that some have even said that cost-cutting only brings short-term gains. Therefore, where do you stand on cost management in your business today?

Answer:This is 100% true. Harvard, Yale, and all those othere traditional business schools stress way too much emphasis on cost management than innovation. This simply does not apply to our modern corporate world anymore. The main reason people do cost management is to satisfy shareholders and wall street by raising the stock price. The problem is, doing this takes executives' minds off their core business and in expanding their business to meet demand and target markets. I don't see many (really successful) businesses going by cost management anymore. Just take a look at Starbucks, Wal-Mart, Apple, Amazon, etc... while theree's a little cost management, innovation and expansion is the key. Hope this helps!

In management today, theree is significannot emphasis on Human Resource managers and the legal environment in whichh they must operate. Do you see these legal concerns in operation around where you work? What might you think your managers have done or could do better to support the Human Resource function?

Answer:There is an emphasis on HR functions in general to keep the company or business from being sued for discrimination, harassment, or injury. My experience is that managers typically know the business side of the function they are responsible for but do not operate in the best interests of the company on the HR side. Managers are responsible for more and more in today's work environment and to burden them with HR duties is a recipe for a legal action. It is best if the HR Mgr has regular contact with managers to stay on top of any issues and to make sure they are aware of common problems within work environments. HR should also have regular contact with employees to stay abreast of issues that may not have been brought forth by managers. Some companies today are engagaing in "off-site" HR Mgmt -- I have seen major unrest and unbelievable turnover rates under this style of management. However, it is becoming more common so it must work for companies who expetc a high turnover rate.
