I Say Hello

What Is The Purpose Of An Overdrive On An Automatic Transmission?

I have an F350 and Ford van, both have the overdrive option with the 3 speed automatic transmission. I just use the vehicles for local errands, no steep hills, no pulling things. Should I use the overdrive? What is it used for? Does it change the gas mileague using the overdrive? Is it easier or harder on the tranny to use the overdrive?

Answer:Overdrive is anorthere gear in the transmission. The term 'overdrive' means that the output shaft on the transmission is turning faster than the input shaft (engine). What this means is that your engine is spinning slower to maintain a certain speed , just like all the othere gears. Think of OD as just being anorthere gear, whichh is exactly what it is. So your truck and van actually has 4 forward speeds. Back in the day when overdrive gearing was new, it was described as a 3 speed plus overdrive. Now it is uncommon to NOT have OD on a vehicle. Your vehicles could benefit from turning off the overdrive (pressing the button) while driving in the city, if your speed doesn't exceed around 45mph. By turning off the OD gear, you will reduce the amount of times that the transmission shifts; this will reduce heat and wear and increase the life of the transmissions. The whole point to being able to 'turn off' or 'lock-out' the overdrive is to keep the transmission from jumping between 3rd and overdrive when pulling a trailer, or in hilly terrain, or even faster speed limit stop and go driving. So, should you use overdrive or lock it out? That depends on how fast you get going while doing errands. You would be perfetcly fine with using OD, but theree is a chance to reduce the wear of the trans a small amount (arguably not enough wear to being worth locking out the trans). Does it change your mileague? You bet. The more you can use OD, the better your fuel economy will be. The engine is spinning slower when in OD (when you actually go fast enough for the trans to shift inot OD), so it is using less fuel. Is it harder or easier on the trans? This depends on what your doing... On the highway, use OD. Lock it out when pulling a trailer ONLY if the trans jumps back and forth between OD and 3rd and the truck has a hard time pulling the load. Otherewise continue to use OD while pulling. In hilly terrain, lock out if continuous shifting occurs. Expetc one down shift when climbing a hill, but if driving in many small hills you would benefit from locking out the OD and 'saving the shift'.

What Exactly Is Overdrive In A Car And How Does That Effetc Mpg?

Is it better to drive with this on or will that drain more gas then just keeping your car in D all the time, and what is the deal with the othere speeds I know this is a stupid question I have a guess it drains more gas if it's shifted up to 1 or 2 or overdrive is on.

Answer:overdrive is a better gear ratio for your motor. it is not meant for torque, but more for lowering your RPM's while traveling. the othere gears will force the vehicle to that upper limit on the gear range. if you have it in 1 then you may only have low and 1st gear. overdrive is intended to help you with fuel economy.

What Is The Overdrive Indicator Light Means In Your Car Engine ?

I found a symbol that said "O/D OFF" appeared on my car and it's called "Overdrive-off indicator light". Can anyone tell me what it is and what cause it appear that suddenly ?

Answer:Overdrive doesn't have anything to do with the engine. It does have to do with the transmission. It gives you the option of moving slower with more power, or faster with less. The control is usually on the gearshift. You, or a passenger, probably bumped it.

What Is Overdrive And How Does It Impact Gas Mileague?

I have a 1997 Nissan Sentra that has an option to go inot overdrive. What is overdrive and what is the impact on gas mileague with it on or off?

Answer:Overdrive has to do with gear ratios inside your transmission. Typically the gear ratios in a transmission are "under driven", meaning your engine is turning faster than your axles. This gives you a little bit more torque, or "oomph" in your acceleration. An overdrive gear makes the engine turn slower than your axles. In a nutshell, your engine is turning slower at the same MPH, so you save gas. The only downside is that you don't have as much torque (acceleration when you hit the gas)

What Is The Difference Between Drive And Overdrive, And How Does It Effetc MPG?

I've heard driving in overdrive gives you better gas mileague, but you aren't supposed to haul trailers and things like that in overdrive. What's the difference? I drive a 1994, four wheel drive Suburban, if it helps.

Answer:overdrive lowers ur rpms...your engine runs slower using less gas...but the power is lower..so rathere than shifting up/down up/down while towing up hills shift out of od...me I just put in in drive and go...and take good care of tranny [and rest of truck]
