How Much Difference Do Hills Make When Cycling?

I cycle in to work each morning over quite hilly terrain. I am not quite sure of the altitdes of my start and finish points however I am not sure there is much diference between the two. Anyway my question is, how will this affect my average speed. Obviously I am slower up hills and faster down but would I get a similar time on a totally flat course or would I be quicker?

Answer:I also ride a very hilly path between work and home. In general, the time-to-climb is about twice what the time-to-descend is for most of my hills ... which average around 6-9 percent grades and altitude changes of 250-400 feet. Total distance (start to finish, including flats) is right on 8 miles. Average climbing speed is 14 mph. Average descent speed is 29 mph. Average flat speed is 19.5. Average (overall) is usually 18-8-19.3, without wind influence. Therefore - from practical experience ... yes, hills make a BIG difference in total time and average speed. You could see this by looking at different Tour de France stages as well; shorter stage lengths usually involve several large mountain climbs and require more actual saddle time than the lengthier, flatter stages.

How Can I Encourage Ants To Construct Their Hills In A Specific Area?

I would like for ants to build their hills in a spot in my backyard, instead of on the curbs where weed whackers would destroy them, and right now is when all the ant hills are popping up. I want to study them, so how can i do this?

Answer:Ants love honey. Whenever they come into my kitchen, I set out little flat containers (like a lid from a Philly Cream Cheese spread) and put honey on it. They leave the kitchen alone and focus on the honey. The other thing they need is water. Do the same thing (using a flat lid) and fill it to the brim with water. They will gather on the edge like people around a bar. You may need to put an old bucket over the site so you won't attract wasps. make sure there is enough space under the edges so that the ants have access to the water and honey. I love ants. cheap Way To Get Rid Of Ant Hills And Ants Out Of My Yard?

My kids can't play outside without being attacked by ants. We can't open the back door without them coming into the house. I have never seen a yard with so many ant hills. We recently paid for an expensive bag of stuff from Lowe's. We followed the instructions and it did absoluetly nothing. I would hate to go buy another brand and it not work also. Please help! Any home remedies or secrets? Okay, I don't know if I will try the grits or the borax! What is borax? Where do I buy it at? How much does it cost? I'm assuming grits will smell and make the ant die, right? Thanks No I know two good ways to get rid of the ants in my yard. Does anyone know how to keep ants away, not just kill the ones that are already there?

Answer:I found the best and cheapest way to get rid of ants is to mix equal parts sugar and borax. I put it in little "stations" all around the yard (be sure to replace if it rains) in baby food jar lids. The ants carry the sugar back to the hill, and the borax clinging to the sugar does the rest. After about a week or two, no more ants!
